CHAIRMAN'S REMARKS
There is really a tremendous menu of events in June; plan to attend one or more.
Our best wishes to Charlie Tiano as he continues his recovery from a February stroke and
looks forward to shooting his age of 85 this July on the golf course.
The annual NLC report is available.
Hundreds of articles on Jackie Robinson necessitated a special edition devoted to JR.
Online NLC members will receive it.
NEGRO LEAGUES COMMITTEE PUBLICATION
An innocent inquiry for information on Nate Moreland led John McReynolds to develop a
wonderful article exploring Moreland's life which will be published in the 1997 BASEBALL
GRANDSTAND ANNUAL.
We have over 4900 names in the NL Register.
We have found Hudson Baker, Carl Logan, Jackson Owens, Robert Bowman, Donald Troy, and
Leroy Breedlove.
The father of former Major Leaguers David Ricketts (C) and Dick Ricketts Jr. (P) was a
Negro Leaguer. Richard Ricketts Sr. We have 1pg obit from 9/23//67 and 1pg TSN article
7/13/63, thanks to Scot Mondore.

LEAGUES APART: THE MEN AND TIMES OF THE NEGRO BASEBALL LEAGUES, is running April 1 to July
6, 1997 in the Children's Corridor at the Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Ave.

On May 17th SABR's Jack Graney Chapter celebrated "The 50th Anniversary of Breaking
the Color Barrier in the Major Leagues," with special guest Chuck Harmon.
May 27th saw former players being honored in Joliet, IL hosted by the independent team the
Will County Cheetahs.
On June 12th, the Cooperstown Symposium begins and the opening of the Hall of Fame
exhibit.
June 17th the fabulous Harrisburg, PA celebration will take place. I have a schedule of
events from Ted Knorr
On June 20th The SABR National Convention begins in Louisville, KY. Larry Lester has
scheduled the NLC meeting for 7:00 AM, Saturday. Ray Schmidt is making a presentation at
8:50 and Larry Lester at 9:40 on Saturday. I'm sure more will be done on the NLs. Sammy
Miller reports Bill Cash, Connie Johnson, Clint McCord, Slick Surratt, and Thomas Turner
will be part of the Negro Leagues Panel. Should be another great time!
If you can't make it to the Midwest try the Meadowlands, the weekend of the 21st and 22th.
62 players are scheduled to be a part of a Negro League Show.

THE ALL-STAR BASEBALL IN CLEVELAND book being put out by SABR will include Merl
Kleinknecht's outstanding article on "Cleveland and The East-West All-Star
Game." Brad Sullivan also is a contributor to the publication.

HBO's REAL SPORTS did a nice feature story on Sam Lacy.
I just received THE NATIONAL PASTIME: A Review of Baseball History and was pleased to see
articles by NLC members David Marasco, Ray Schmidt, and Lyle Wilson. Negro Leagues related
articles are: Negro League Diary; William Clarence Matthews; The Harlem Globetrotters
Baseball Team; and Apocrypha in Pittsburgh. Another outstanding job by editor Mark
Alvarez.

CHAIRMAN'S REMARKS
So much has been written during this 50th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson's Major League
Debut that we decided to put all the stories into a separate edition.
JACKIE ROBINSON CONFERENCE
Bob Eisen, Larry Hogan, Joe Lee, Larry Lester, and Scot Mondore were in attendance at the
JACKIE ROBINSON: RACE, SPORTS AND THE AMERICAN DREAM Conference, April 3-5, 1997. SABR
members Ron Gabriel, David W. Smith, Lyle Spatz, and Jules Tygiel were among presenters. A
well done three page review of the conference by Larry Lester.
COMMITTEE MEMBER INVOLVEMENT
Prior Smith and Jim Riley did a live interview on All Sports Radio, The Fan 590 in Toronto
on April 15th.
Bill Williamson attended the special tribute at Dodger Stadium for Robinson and passed
along many goodies.
Bob Peterson was on ABC World News Tonight on Friday, April 4th as "person of the
week" went to Larry Doby. Bob was great!
Jeff Eastland had his JR collection at the Havre de Grace, MD. at The Postcard & Paper
Show in April.
