After nine straight Negro National League pennants, the Homestead Grays' skein was broken by a young talented Newark Eagles ballclub. Returning from Military service in World War II were two players who would win future stardom in the major leagues as outfielders, but formed a doubleplay combination for the Eagles: Monte Irvin at shortstop and Larry Doby at secondbase. Both also led the team offensively. Joining them in a power-laden lineup were first baseman Lennie Pearson and outfielders Johnny Davis and Bob Harvey. Manager Biz Mackey's solid pitching staff was led by Leon Day, who pitched an opening day no-hitter after two years in the Army, and included Max Manning and Rufus Lewis. The Eagles won both halves of the split season, with a composite .746 winning percentage and defeated Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Monarchs in a seven-game World Series to claim the Championship for owners Abe and Effa Manley.
