Organized in 1911 by Jess McMahon, an Irish sports promoter, the Lincolns were the dominant team in the East for three consecutive years. Led by ace righthanded fastball artists, Smokey Joe Williams and Cannonball Dick Redding, the Lincolns finished with a 108-12 record in 1913. McMahon declared them to be superior to any team anywhere, including in the American and National Leagues. Anchored by playing manager John Henry Lloyd, who had jumped back to the East from Rube Foster's Chicago American Giants, the team also included speedy outfielder Spot Poles, homerun-slugging catcher Louis Santop, secondbaseman "Home Run" Johnson and thirdbaseman Bill Francis.
