Winners of nine consecutive Negro National League pennants, the Homestead Grays won their first Negro World Series in 1943 when they defeated the Negro American League Champions Birmingham Black Barons in seven games. The Grays had Cool Papa Bell leading off to set the table for their power tandem of Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard, who earned the appelation "Thunder Twins" from the press. Other stars for the Grays were Howard Easterling, Sam Bankhead, Jud Wilson and Jerry Benjamin. The pitching staff included Ray Brown, Roy Partlow and Johnny Wright, who was the second black player signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers. The team was managed by Candy Jim Taylor.
