This was the Negro National League's last pennant winner, as the league broke up the following season. Buck Leonard led the league in batting and tied for the lead in homeruns with his youthful teammate Luke Easter, who played in the outfield because he could not dislodge Leonard from firstbase. The Grays' entire outfield (Easter, Bob Thurman and Luis Marquez) would later make it to the white major leagues. Wilmer Fields was the ace of the pitching staff and also frequently played thirdbase. For the third time in the decade, the Grays defeated the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro World Series. The 1948 Series was the last one ever played. | ||
